Walter Gropius, of the Bauhaus movement, built his boxy home to relate to lines and glass rather than the surrounding environment. This makes both the landscape and the residence uniquely and simultaneously interesting.
The school itself had to make the grand statement. If this building didn't sum up the movement, those who were critical of modernism would have won their argument. Luckily, function preceded form in everything from the slab canopy over the vestibule to the off-set hallways curtained with glass and reinforcing mullions.
Furniture quickly followed suit. Le Corbusier's 'Relaxation Machine' happened to be beautiful because it followed the human form.
